While debating on BBC Newsnight, Emily Thornberry said that the Boris government is not ready to consider the European Court of Human Rights when it comes to following laws.
Additionally, she stated that the Prime Minister is incapable of understanding the judgment of ECHR and is being biased while choosing which ones to pick and which ones to unfollow.
This comes right after the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ethical advisor, Lord Christopher Geidt. In his resignation letter, Geidt shared that Prime Minister had put him in a tight spot that could have broken the ministerial code.
During the debate, television presenter Kirsty Wark suggested that Supreme Court could be a great alternative to the ECHR in Strasbourg.
In response to this, Emily Thornberry, Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales, took a direct dig at Boris and said that it was the government’s idea to stay within the European Court of Human Rights.
However, now they are acting out and paying attention to the laws that may work in their party’s favor. Thornberry compared the government to drunk people in the pub, which aids in distracting the general public from real issues.
Justice Minister Victoria Atkins added that the idea is to update the framework and structures of ECHR that work in favor of people. However, looking at the present situation, the constituents’ expectations are not being met.
This makes it easier for the criminal courts to overlook the importance of human rights. Thus it is crucial to analyze the policies and develop an effective framework.
